The New Plastic Shopping Bag

October 7th, 2011 posted by admin

From the 1st October 2011 in Wales (United Kingdom) a charge on single-use plastic carrier bags came in to force, with customers now having to pay a minimum of 5p per bag. Businesses who fail to comply with the new levy will face fines of up to £5,000. The charge does not stop at plastic bags but also extends to paper bags, such as those used for bagging clothes bought in high street giant Primark

The charge is of course welcomed by many as it is a huge step in the attempt to protect the environment for generations to come. Some who have been aware of the impending charge for quite some time have taken to creating their own cloth bags to sell on to shoppers, which they can reuse time and time again.

Many stores have of course themselves introduced and alternative to the plastic shopping bag, either a cloth version or more durable plastic bag constructs, such as Tesco’s ‘Bag for Life’. However these store alternatives are generic and are of course blazed with the companies name for marketing purposes.

However, I noticed in the local antique come bric-a-brac store that a lady who runs a stall in there had taken to creating her own cloth bags from seconds material which she is selling for just a couple of pounds. She often uses seconds pillow cases to form the ‘bag'of the bag as such, which cuts sewing time and leaves more time to create unique designs for the front. The ladies hand made cloth shopping bags had all sorts of patterns, from flowers to fairies, to sun symbols and scarecrows, she had even made smaller shoppers for children to use.

I thought the hand made cloth shoppers were such a great craft idea, one which could be introduced to schools and groups, so that people could make their own ‘bags for life'to use whilst shopping and to cut down on plastic bags being purchased unnecessarily. I have started to create shopper bags myself to give to my loved ones this Christmas and if this HR software provider can do it, so can you!
